After a vigorous bout of fencing with Geoffrey, Morgan saluted his partner and removed his mask. “Well done,” he praised.

Geoffrey let out a bark of laughter as he took off his mask. “I highly doubt that. You beat me every time.”

“If you keep practicing, I have no doubt you will beat me soon.” Morgan extended the mask, chest padding, and sword towards a footman.

Lord Paxton approached, handing each of them a drink. He turned to Morgan. “Your fencing skills are impressive.”

“That’s the difference between a Cambridge man and an Oxford man,” Morgan jested.

“Come and eat,” Lord Paxton invited with a chuckle. He pointed to the table set up with an assortment of food. “Your wife informed our cook of all your favorite desserts and asked for them to be served.”

Morgan’s steps faltered. “Did she?” When did she have the time to do that, he wondered. She had already told him about the custard, but it surprised him that Lord Paxton knew about it.

“I overheard her telling a group of maids that it was love at first sight for the two of you,” Gaspard said, stepping closer to him.

Josette was good, Morgan had to admit. She was definitely winning the bet.

“Gentlemen, may I have your attention, please,” Lord Paxton raised his voice and requested. As they assembled, he stood in front of the group. “Now that we are away from the ladies, I wanted to discuss some business with you. The coal mine in Champagney has been in my family for generations, but it is time that I sold my majority shares. Between the estates I manage, designing multiple buildings, and supervising the work at the palace of Westminster, I am afraid the mine has become more of an afterthought. As the four main investors in the mine, I felt it would be best to offer to sell it to one of you first.”

“I will buy your shares!” Mr. Christophe Mancini shouted.

Mr. Lemaure scoffed. “I think not. Why should you have first rights?”

Lord Paxton put his hands up. “I anticipated a dispute. Might I propose that my shares be distributed evenly amongst all of you who are interested in this venture?”

“I am interested,” Mr. Antoine said.

All eyes turned to Mr. Perier, and he nodded. “I think that’s a fine solution.”

“Excellent,” Lord Paxton exclaimed, regaining their attention. “I had hoped that this would be the resolution everyone would agree to. So, I took the liberties of having my solicitors draw up the contracts. That’s why I asked all of you to come. This will save months of negotiating through missives and sending contracts back and forth via post.”

Lord Paxton put up his hand as the four investors inundated him with questions. “I assure you that the price of my shares will be fair, but we can adjourn after dinner tonight to discuss the exact terms.”

“It appears we will be spending time with the ladies while the other men hash out the contracts,” Gaspard said to him.

“Which is where I would rather be anyway,” Morgan replied, grinning.
